Because he's a student of human nature, he'll observe... for a little while. He's unused to the completely silent treatment, and at least one of them is sociable. Keeping up in silence will last him another half block or two but he knows himself. He'll get bored with it soon enough.
He's a musician. He's used to response. Applause or jeers, requests for more or people getting up and leaving. And he's really unused to the latter.
And so he watches the way Aya's eyes move, as if every shadow puts them in mortal danger. That, of course, could only be true for one of them and he finds the caution amusing enough. But where's the fun in holding back and holding close all the time?
